Hiring Woes in Construction: Attracting Tech-Savvy Millennials

Construction firms are hiring, but are struggling to fill positions with a tech-savvy younger workforce. The Associated General Contractors of America (AGC) has released a new analysis of federal employment data that construction employment has increased in 228 out of 358 metro areas between June 2015 and 2016. While this is great news for the industry, construction firms are having a hard time with a labor shortage. The AGC has also reported that 86% of contractors have difficulty filling jobs.



The hiring issues may arise from a generational gap in the industry. Some point to the idea that the Millennial generation finds blue-collar work unappealing. With the new generation’s perceived safety concerns, or the idea that jobs requiring college degrees are more prestigious, there are fewer skilled workers available. Competitive benefits and job security are also a concern. Construction industries will need to find a way to attract younger employees.

Without a fresh influx of younger workers, the current workforce is aging. Older workers, defined by the Dept. of Labor as 40 years old and over, can also be a costly problem. The Center for Construction Research and Training reports that the median age for construction workers is now approximately 38 years old. Though the experience of an older workforce is a great asset, the CDC National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) reports that these aging workers are more susceptible to death and severe injury. The labor shortage is then compounded by an increase in time lost due to recovery.

What do these issues mean for construction firms? As a result, there is now high competition for workers and an increase in base pay rates. The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that over the period of May 2006 to May 2016, average hourly earnings of construction employees has risen by 27%. The effect of higher costs and a smaller workforce can affect the bottom line, and project completion schedules.


Firms are trying to develop better ways to confront the dilemma. Recognizing the situation three years ago, the Foundation of the Wall and Ceiling Industry published a strategy to attract younger workers. The industry should look beyond the stigmas associated with the younger generation, as being lazy and entitled.
